Apostles’ Creed Series

The Apostles’ Creed … “I believe in God the Father, Almighty, Maker of heaven and earth, and in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord….” Many of you have heard it. It’s a creed universally acknowledged by all Christian churches as a fundamental creed. This creed is called the Apostles’ Creed not because it was produced by the apostles themselves but because it contains a brief summary of their teachings.
The Apostles’ Creed was the earliest church’s version of what today is sometimes called a sinner’s prayer, only it’s not done in the form of a prayer. If you wanted to be baptized, if you wanted to take the Lord’s Supper, they would say, “Do you believe …?” and this is what you said. “Yes, I believe,” and this was a summary.
The trouble with many of us today is, as we’re talking about God and thinking about spiritual things, do we really have a vocabulary? Do we know what atonement means? Do we know what judgment means? Do we know what holiness means? What we’re going to do for several weeks is take a word or a series of words, and we’re going to look at passages in the Bible that expounds and explains the words.
