ADVERSITIES: HOW TO HANDLE THEM? (Lk. 23:34; 23:43)
”Father forgive them ….; today you will be with me in paradise”
A few weeks back I preached to our community on ‘How to handle our adversities?’.
Time and space do not allow me to list all the aspects that we need to take in to consideration.
By taking the cross as a model, we will remember to forgive those who have wronged us, even as Christ forgave us. That’s what Christ prayed for on the cross, ‘Father forgive them, for they do not know what they are doing’. With all the pains, tortures, mockery and insults that they inflicted on Him, if He could still pray for their forgiveness, why can’t we also forgive the lesser debts of others?
The cross should also encourage us to bless others in the midst of our pain. To the repenting thief on His side, Jesus said, ‘You will be with me in paradise this day’. What a great example! In the midst of excruciating pain and even when He was about to lay down His life, He did not refuse to bless a wretched thief on the cross.
There are many more ways in which we can emulate the cross as a model, of course, but we will look at them at another opportune time. However, let’s make sure to handle our adversities by taking the cross as a model.
